THE INTERNET
THE INTERNET CONSISTS OF TENS of thousands of computer networks linked together to form one huge global networks, allowing any computer on one networks to communicate with any computer on another. The two main services used on the internet are emails and the World Wide Web. Email allows text messages to be sent - along with attached computer files, images, or video clips, for example- to other computer on the internet. The Web consists of billions of pages are made up of digital files that are stored on computers across the world and can be viewed using a Web browser.
HOW THE INTERNET WORKS
It is a worldwide network that links together virtually every computer on the planet - well over a billion of them. Each computer has its own address(Internet Protocol, or IP, Address) so that any other machine on the networks can instantly send emails or messages to it or receive them from it.
To receive and send messages the following steps are-
Sender's computer breaks photo into many tiny digits packets.
- Each packet is labelled with the destination address.
- Separate packets travel across different routes over the Internet.
- Pieces are reassembled at the end.
- Receiver sees the the final picture as though it traveled in one piece.
PACKET SWITCHING
When you email a photo, it does not travel over the internet in one big lump. Instead, it's broken into tiny "packets". Each one is given the final IP address and travels separately. This makes data stream across internet very efficiently.
GETTING ONLINE
Well over half the world's population is now online. people in richer countries, such as the USA, were first to get connected in the mid-1990, but even people in some of the poorest developing countries are now online.
After the world wide web was invented in 1989, lots of countries online. By the early 2000, people in virtually every nation were connected. Many people use their computers for chatting to friends and sharing photos or news.
